Types of Mulch

Surrey Hills Garden Supplies carry 4 types of mulches:

10mm and 20mm Pine Bark mulch, Midnight Black mulch and Organic Mulch.

10mm Pine Bark

Chocolatey-brown nuggets in appearance.10mm Pine Bark is a premium product choice for “high profile” landscaping works, particularly used in plant-scape areas aiming to contrast to existing buildings. It’s also known as Cottage Bark or Tan Bark. It’s renowned for its ability not to blow or wash away, but still allows airflow to the soil, as well as being excellent at water retention. It is long lasting, has good capacity to absorb and retain moisture. Installation should be to a depth of 100mm for new applications and typically 50-75mm for “top up” installations.

10mm pine mulch is great to spread under trees and shrubs where leaves and bark fall often as it will blend into the mulch. Pine Bark does not breakdown quickly. It’s also commonly used in playgrounds under playground equipment. It should be applied to the soil surface and not dug into the soil. It’s important to keep mulches away from the stems of plants to prevent mould or fungal disease in the bark.

20mm Pine Bark

20mm Pine Bark is a larger version of the Pine Bark and brown in appearance. 20mm Pine is generally used to cover larger open areas or larger garden beds. It’s also known as Tan Bark. It is renowned for its ability not to blow or wash away, but still allows air flow to the soil, as well as being excellent at water retention. It is long lasting, has good capacity to absorb and retain moisture, and is also extremely low maintenance. Installation should be to a depth of 100mm for new applications and typically 50-75mm for “top up” installations.

20mm pine mulch is great to spread under trees and shrubs where leaves and bark fall often as it will blend into the mulch. Pine Bark does not breakdown quickly. Due to its chunky appearance, it generally spreads further making it suitable for larger garden beds. It should be applied to the soil surface and not dug into the soil. It’s important to keep mulches away from the stems of plants to prevent mould or fungal disease in the bark.

Organic Mulch

Organic Mulch is an organic product, using a controlled batch composting technique. It’s also known as Compost or Compost Mulch. Organic Mulch is dark grey to almost black in appearance when moist. The blend comprises of soft garden organics, leaves, small branches that are mulched and aged until mature. Aged super fines, aged saw dust and Urea (Nitrogen Based additive) are also added to the blend.

Organic Mulch is great for increasing the level of organic matter for any type of soil, which in turn improves moisture retention, reduces soil erosion and gives slow release of nutrients into the soil. Organic Mulch creates an ideal environment for worms and micro-organisms.

Organic mulch is used in several landscaping applications such as domestic garden beds, new garden beds, vegetable patches, landscape projects, rose gardens and ideal for garden rejuvenation. A layer of 75mm – 100mm for new gardens and between 50mm -75mm for existing gardens is recommended.

Black Midnight Mulch

Black Midnight Mulch is produced from recycled timber.  The timber is produced in a grinder hammer mill free from any foreign materials as the product goes through a number of processes to remove foreign objects such as nails, staples and plastics. It is then put through a colour process using environmentally friendly products. The Longalife® coloured mulches have the added bonus of retaining colour for a substantial period than traditional mulches. It is recommended that coloured mulches are turned over with shovel or pitchfork every 6 weeks. The Black Midnight mulch is purely a decorative mulch and has no fertilising or organic properties.

Black Mulch should be applied to the soil surface and not dug into the soil. It’s important to keep mulches away from the stems of plants to prevent mould or fungal disease in the bark. A layer of 50mm – 100mm will give the best results for retaining moisture and preventing weed growth. It is recommended to wear gloves when spreading Black Mulch and laying the bulk product on a tarp when it is delivered as it’s a dyed product and will stain.
