What soil to use for a Vegetable Garden?

Have you ever thought about creating your own planter box or vegetable patch and which soil to use?

In these uncertain times of Covid19 with many restrictions in place, now is a great time to create or revitalise your vegie patch or planter box. There can be a lot of satisfaction for you and the kids watching a seedling sprout, watching it grow, nurturing it and ultimately picking your harvest and combining it with a homecooked meal. The taste and freshness of your own vegetables is second to none.

With surrounding suburbs such as Camberwell, Balwyn, Canterbury and Box Hill having larger backyards there isoften ample room to create a vegie patch.

At Surrey Hills Garden Supplies, we carry 2 types of soil that can be used for vegie patches.

Our blended-soil is a highquality soil comprising a blend of several ingredients – Sawdust, Sandy Loam, chicken manure & pine fines. Blended Soil is the ideal soil for planter boxes and vegetable gardens

If you are looking for a soil that is less dense than blended soil and has a higher nutritional value then Premium Organic soil is the ideal choicepremium-organic-soil is a well aerated organic product which is a 50% mix of Organic Mulch & Blended Soil. Its great for increasing the level of organic matter in the soil, which in turn improves moisture retention, reduces soil erosion and gives slow release of nutrients into the soil. Premium Organic soil has more body than Organic Mulch as it has a higher % of soil.

In addition to our soils at Surrey Hills Garden Supplies, you can also enhance the soil by adding products such as Dynamic Lifter, manures and fertilisers such as Charlie Carp.

Other products that are used in vegie patches that we carry are Rally Mulch Matt for weed control, Treated Pine Sleepers, Pea Straw, garden stakes, Scoria and Geotextile for drainage assistance.

Some other aspects to consider when commencing a vegie patch or planter box is how much sun the area will get during the day, the distance from the house (try and keep it as close as possible to your house) and you will need to check its progress every day and water it.

Ideally choose an area with full sun for the majority of the day. Endeavour to create a well-drained vegie patch – either of our soils are ideally suited for growing Autumn vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli, onions and peas which all grow well in Melbourne.

We also carry items that you may require gardening tools such as weederscultivators and trowels, pesticides, garden stakes, weed matt, lime and Dynamic lifter.

No need to leave home as we delivery as little as 1/8 (0.125) of a cubic mtr up to a full large truck full of product, we delivery to all surrounding suburbs such as Box Hill, Blackburn, Camberwell, Mont Albert and Balwyn.
