Springtime Gardening

It’s that time of year again, the birds are singing, the days are gradually getting longer and Melbourne is alive with the sounds of footy finals. This can only mean one thing, Spring is here. The cold Winter months are finally behind us and the weather is starting to get a bit warmer, the ideal time to rejuvenate and refresh your garden beds and lawn. Our hibernation time is over.

The first task will be to aerate your lawn to enhance regrowth. Using your garden fork gently aerate the lawn, this is best done while the soil is still moist which will make for easier digging. Now is also the time to spray weed killer on any pesky weeds that have cropped up. Don’t forget to fertilise your lawn to replenish the nutrients that may have been lost over the colder months, and if needed, plant some lawn seed if you have any bare patches in your lawn. Make sure you have all your garden supplies on hand before you start.

Before your plants start to bloom, give all your garden beds a bit of love and care. Pull out any weeds and debris that may be left over from Winter and spread a layer of mulch over the soil. At Surrey Hills Garden Supplies, we would recommend either Pea-Straw or Sugar Cane mulch for this purpose. Prune old leaves and branches off any trees or shrubs, being mindful not to cut any new buds that are starting to appear. Some plants, such as hibiscus or hydrangea, need to be done early so they will have beautiful flowers in Summer. If you have not already tidied up your roses, very early Spring is the time. Remember, the general rule is, the harder you prune your roses, the better they will grow, so don’t be afraid to cut them right back. Again, be careful not to cut any new shoots that have started growing. Fertilising your plants and garden beds will help feed the roots of your plants.

Now is the time to think about your Summer garden and what you would like to grow. Whether it is flowers (eg: Everlasting Daisy, Petunia, Impatiens), vegetables (eg: Silverbeet, Carrots, Lettuce) or herbs (eg: Basil, Chives), early Spring is the best time to plant some seeds. The moisture in the soil will help the plants become established before it gets too hot. With a bit of planning and research, you can ensure you will have a successful crop of plants growing when you want them to.
