One of the jobs you have decided to tackle in preparation for summer in Melbourne is laying a paving area for all the wonderful barbecues you have planned. The area has been marked out, you have the 1,000 pavers you have calculated you need and designed your pattern. The area is fully prepared with the layer of crushed rock sourced from your garden supplies centre, the crushed rock has been laid, levelled and compacted. All you need to do now is work out how much sand is needed to lay the pavers correctly.
It is recommended that the layer of bedding sand (which can be purchased from Surrey Hills Garden Supplies in Canterbury Rd) be around 30mm deep to give a good base for the pavers. If you work on an area that is roughly 30 square metres, you will need approx. 9 cubic metres of sand spread over the prepared base. Using a screeding board (or a piece of timber), level out the sand to give a smooth, even surface for the pavers to be laid on to, lay your pavers as per your design. While laying the pavers, remember to leave a space in between each one (2-3mm should be fine), so you can sweep Gap Sand over the pavers into the crevices, a 20kg bag should be enough for this.
Remember, if at all unsure or you need to verify your own calculations and quantities, it is always best to ask the staff at Surrey Hills Garden Supplies, on Canterbury Rd, while you are there you can collect your supplies at the same time. We can also deliver all types of standard garden supplies to Hawthorn, Box Hill, Blackburn, Ashburton, Heidelberg, and other Melbourne suburbs.
The birds are singing in Hawthorn, the flowers are blooming in Camberwell, the footy finals are getting underway in Melbourne, the weather is warming up and you have the ‘Spring-cleaning’ bug. Don’t just think of cleaning the house, here are some tips to help rejuvenate your garden and lawn after a bleak winter as well.
The first job you should tackle is your lawn. Compaction of the soil is quite common after all the rain we’ve had, so using a garden fork, or aerator, turn the soil underneath your lawn to break up the clumps, loosening the soil. This will provide good aeration throughout the soil and promote healthy growth of your lawn. When the lawn has dried out enough, mow your lawns, remembering not to go too short at this stage, and remove any weeds that have ‘popped up’ over winter. If you have any dead spots or yellowing areas, re-plant with seeds or lay a new patch of lawn. The final tip for your lawn care is – remember to fertilise – this is where Surrey Hills Garden Supplies comes in. Fertilising at periodic intervals will provide the important nutrients, and along with regular watering, will help your lawn become thick and lush.
Plants and garden beds need to be cared for after winter also. Trees and plants need to be pruned to remove any dead or diseased branches or leaves to encourage new growth. Garden beds need to be turned over in a similar way to your lawn, again providing good aeration and promoting healthy plants throughout spring. Adding a layer of mulch onto the beds will not only keep weeds down, it will keep the moisture and nutrients in the soil leading your plants to bloom and blossom.

There are a number of reasons you may need to dig a trench in your garden, poor drainage, providing a barrier for your plants or possibly installing an irrigation system. Regardless of why, the fundamentals are the same for most trenches.
Firstly, you need the correct tools, a spade, a wheelbarrow, wooden stakes, stringline, 20mm Scoria or Crushed Rock and, if needed, irrigation (ag) pipes. Mark out the area you want for your trench with the stakes and stringline and then start digging, generally to a depth of approx 400mm and 300mm wide should be sufficient.
When laying pipes or irrigation, it is best to have about 75mm of scoria or rock under and at least 100mm over the top of the pipe to form a layer of protection to it.
The most important thing to remember is this equation – lengthxwidthxdepth, this will give you the amount of scoria or rock you need in cubic metres. For example, if you have a 10M ag drain to lay it would be: 10M x .4M x .3M = 1.2 cubic metres of scoria or rock.
All materials (including scoria or crushed rock) required for your trench are available at our Surrey Hills yard, and the staff will be happy to help you with any more questions you have. Call us on (03) 9890 3443, or drive into our garden supplies yard in Canterbury Rd.
Whether it is a retaining or feature/ornamental wall you need, you have decided to build it with bricks. The design is finalised, you know you need 1,000 bricks to complete it but what about the other elements required to get the job done?
Generally you will need approx. 1 1/4 tonne of brick sand and 16 bags of builders cement (using 20kg bags), working on the ratio of 3 parts sand to 1 part cement. Brick sand comes in either yellow for a slightly darker coloured mortar, or white which is lighter and can easily have a coloured oxide added to alter the colour to suit your needs.
Dont forget the trowel, spirit level or stringline, shovel as well as strong gloves to complete your project. All of these items are available at Surrey Hills Garden Supplies, located on Canterbury Rd, Surrey Hills.
Lilydale Toppings is a classic cover, used as an alternative to concrete or brick paving, for driveways and paths in many homes around Blackburn, Hawthorn, Kew, Glen Iris or any other suburb in Melbourne. Lilydale Toppings includes crushed limestone which has a natural tendency to recombine and harden, therefore becoming solid and giving you an aesthetic looking area for walking or driving on.
As a guide, Lilydale Toppings should be laid to a depth of approx 75-100mm for driveways and 50-75mm for pathways. Remember to compact well with either a whacker or vibrating plate after laying to ensure the area is firm and stable. Lilydale Toppings can be ordered for delivery by the cubic metre from Surrey Hills Garden Supplies.
Crushed rock is so versatile: not only can it be used as a base for driveways, paths or even synthetic grass but certain crushed rock can also be used as a decorative topping. With this in mind, we first of all look at what crushed rock is – crushed rock is exactly as it sounds, large rocks crushed into smaller rocks of varying sizes by machines. It can be composed of granite, bluestone, limestone or basalt and is generally crushed to about 20mm down to finer dust.
20mm Crushed Rock should be laid to a minimum depth of 50mm, then up to the desired level (generally about 100-200mm). The depth will vary as to whether or not you have to build up the area you are working on. The important thing to remember is to make sure it is compacted well, either with a whacker or a vibrating plate compacter to stabilise the rock and form a solid base for you to work on.
Surrey Hills Garden Supplies sells crushed rock in 20mm or the very fine Crusher Dust and we can deliver it all around Melbourne, including Hawthorn, Camberwell, Canterbury, Box Hill and Blackburn.
Compost is one of your best friends in terms of gardening and looking after your soil and plants. It provides valuable nutrients and healthy properties to the roots of all your plants, whether they are flowers, lawns, trees or vegetables, and it encourages your flowers or vegetables to flourish. Compost is also good for improving sandy soils by building soil carbon and organic matter naturally.
Before planting your garden beds, apply a layer of approx. 50-100mm compost and dig it into the soil, this spreads the compost evenly throughout, giving an even supply of nutrients. For existing garden beds, apply a layer of approx. 25-50mm on top, this allows the compost to slowly break down while still releasing the vital nutrients the garden beds need.
Lawns need compost too. After applying a layer of 10-15mm of compost over your grass, rake and aerate your lawn to let the nutrients penetrate through to the soil. As with garden beds, combine the compost with the soil before laying new turf.
Trees and shrubs will benefit greatly from a combined compost and soil (roughly 20% compost to soil ratio) mix when backfilling around the trunk of the trees, then watch your trees thrive and grow.
As each season starts for your vegetables, give the soil a top up with compost before planting the seeds, a layer of about 100mm should be sufficient. Remember to add some organic fertilizer, this helps the nitrogen levels required by some vegetables.
